Fried Chicken in the White House

I've come to the mall against my better judgment. I promise myself to restrict spending to my loot of holiday gift cards and enter Macy's department store, wide-eyed. I've purposely arrived in the early afternoon on a week day to avoid crowds. Stumbling into a completely empty dressing room with an armful of clothing, I'm very pleased with myself.

I choose the corner stall in the back because it's big enough for my own private fashion show; I don't much like twirling in front of the paneled community mirror. A small flat screen TV is on the wall close to the entrance. The volume is a little high and Wolf Blitzer's voice booms from the CNN channel. In between two pairs of jeans (on sale!) CNN cuts to clips of the recent heated debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Two female voices enter the dressing room. They talk to each other as friends do. One says how happy she'll be if the jeans fit. The ladies choose stalls midway down the row. Two doors open and close. Hangers clink and conversation continues:

Friend 1: It's great shopping this way! No kids hanging off us. No crowds!
Friend 2: Yeah. Look at this! We have it all to ourselves!
(I freeze, jeans in hand)
Friend 1: We should take a day off every month for shopping.
Friend 2: Definitely. Oooooh...I love these -
(Barack quips about Bill Clinton. Hillary snaps back at Barack.)
Friend 2: Oh god. Again. If I have to hear this one more time...
Friend 1: Ugh! Can you believe him? How he picks at her? Like a little chicken.
Friend 2: Yeah. Pick, pick picaaaw! Hahaha!
Friend 1: Can you imagine him president? What are they gonna serve at White House dinners? Fried chicken? Grits?
Friend 2: Ha! Yeah! And he'll make us pay the Blacks restitution for slavery -
Friend 1: Uh, we already do that. It's called welfare.

Did they ever discover you were listening? I have a feeling their conversation would have different if they had discovered you were there before they said all this.

Hello Selene, no they didn't. I stood frozen holding the jeans in hopes of hearing uncensored conversation. I did that until they finished and left. When I exited the dressing room, maybe 15 mins later, I looked around the entrance but there was no one around.

Yeah cause it's not like there are white people on welfare or anything. *snort*

It's amazing how many people open their mouths and yet have absolutely nothing of any intelligence to say. I think your IQ may have dropped from having listened to their conversation. I wonder if you can get restitution for that?

I wish I were surprised, but I'm not. (Sigh) We have so much work still to do . . .

Yesterday, the EEOC announced the settlement of a lawsuit involving nooses placed in a furniture factory in North Carolina. Yes, nooses. A hostile work environment. Sad.

Hi AntiBarbie, when I can't see the people I'm eavesdropping on my imagination goes wild and draws them for me. In this case, I pictured a blindfolded girl with nails and pins spewing out of her mouth as she spoke. What she said hurt my ears.

JHS, well that's disgusting. There's a lot of misguided hatred out there. Not that hatred is acceptable in any case, but it seems some people so easily project it onto others. These behaviors and words are so viral. They're real life hateful memes.

Oh my goodness, that's just horrible. I'm typless for words to say to that other than absolutely aweful. I'm amazed at some of the things you end up hearing and I'm kind of glad I don't pay too much atention to people. I'd be tempted to let them know just how unalone they are in the dressing rooms and offer my opinion. In the end, a very bad idea, but it's hard not to imagine.

omg - that's unbelievable. Just when I think there's no one left like that...I'm reminded that there is. Sad.

Ouch...It really lets you know where some peoples heads are concerning race and ignorance over politics. We have a ways to go in this country.

I'm hoping electing Obama will help us on so many fronts. It's funny when I listen to him speak or think about him, I don't think of him as black. If I think of it at all I think of him as biracial. I wonder if his white family is feeling a little slighted by all of this conversation about race. He is representative of all of our backgrounds..people should remember that and ask themselves why they use his black heritage to focus on the negative.

Chicken and grits! He's from Hawaii for heavens sakes...maybe poi in the White House would be more accurate.

Stupid people.

You hit a nerve with this one Vienne. I don't think I could have stayed quiet. Good thing it was you and not me in that dressing room.

Best Wishes,
Lisa

OMG...my jaw seriously DROPPED!!! I hate Obama but not because of his color. I just think he sucks. I cannot even imagine someone saying that sort of thing. It's seriously unthinkable to me - never would have even entered my mind! Sheesh. Some people shouldn't be allowed in public (or to breed for that matter).

Unacceptable! its 2008 already. Such closed, dumb, unintelligent and definitely unfunction brains system! This is the kind of people we dont want in this world. I totally telling this at my blog!

Whether you are eavesdropping or not, it doesn't matter I am sure they won't even notice you there. :-)

What i can say is... This is the most worst that i have heard before. Words are not enough to show how worst it is. That's really unbelievable...

Anonymous said...

Shoot, i feel dizzy on the words...that's really disgusting! Why they can say something liked that?

Anonymous said...
